MATTISHALL travelled to Spixworth in the Mummery Cup round two and fully deserved the victory and a place in the quarter-finals, which means a trip to Hempnall.

Manager Gaven Tipple made five changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Wroxham Reserves Tuesday night.

The early exchanges were mostly fought in midfield and the first real shot on goal saw Brett's crisp strike saved by the home keeper.

A long throw by Lewis was flicked on by Fulcher and this caused confusion in the home rearguard, but the effort went unpunished.

A fine run and cross by Lewis saw Jason Knights' effort go narrowly wide.

The home side's first real effort saw Didwell run deep into the visitors' half, but Fulcher made a fine interception.

At the other end Catchpole had a fine shot that went narrowly wide. On 34 minutes a fine run by Lewis ended with the same player's powerful effort on goal being palmed away for a corner by keeper Bilham. A run by Gashut for Spixworth was again intercepted by the impressive Fulcher, who cleared for a corner which came to nothing.

A flowing move by the visitors ended with Brett firing over and it was the same player who provided a fine cross for Knights, who headed narrowly over the bar.

Right on the stroke of half-time Didwell broke free for Spixworth but Pledger made a good save to make sure the sides remained level.

Mattishall started the second half brightly and a Harbour corner saw the keeper palm the ball away from under the bar, but Fulcher follow-up went wide. A poor clearance fell to Harbour, but his effort was deflected for a corner.

The deadlock was finally broken on 56 minutes when Stenner won the ball in midfield and fed the overlapping Palmer. His excellent cross set up Hall for a glancing header that hit the back of the net.

Lewis and Harbour were combining well down the right and Lewis burst through but narrowly missed the target.

Some untidy play led to the home side's Pitcher's fine run ending with another Pledger save. Then Mattishall so nearly increased their lead when Brett got the better of Bloomfield but shot wide.

On 80 minutes Mattishall made their first change when Cole replaced Christian Harbour.

Minutes later a free-kick conceded by Lovell just outside the box saw Askew's effort palmed away for a corner which came to nothing.

Edwards replaced Brett on 85 minutes and he instantly made an impact when he fed Hall and then Knights, who between them should have finished the game off but again missed the target.

Mattishall Reserves were also in cup action, at home to Brandon Reserves, and they advanced to the third round of the C S Morley Cup with a 5-3 extra-time win.

The scorers were Sutherland, Hewitt, Campos and Hill (2).

This week's fixtures see the first team in Friday night action at Watton with a 7.30pm kick-off and the Reserves at home to Hoveton Wherrymen, 2pm on Saturday.
