Dereham give students a lesson in finishing

Dereham Men’s 1st XI 4 Cambridge University 2
Cambridge Uni students were taken back to school on Saturday as Dereham taught them a valuable lesson in attacking hockey.
The students started the game strongly putting plenty of pressure on the Dereham defence, but once they got to the hi e teams D showed dry little imagination just firing hopeful balls into the D with no one able to get in the end of them.
The home team worked their way into the game, and soon took the lead with a counter attack. Richard Stainthorpe found Michael Timm on the left hand side of the D who beat two defenders before shooting from a narrow angle. The Cambridge keeper for some reason lifted his foot and the ball hit both posts before rolling over the line.
This spurred the home team on and more chances were created thanks to the pace of the Dereham attack they were able to exploit the hapless left back. Timm had a couple of golden one on one chances, but the keeper was able to make a couple of great saves.
Cambridge pulled a goal back from a short corner, which proved to be their main threat.
Just before the half time whistle, Timm made it third time lucky as he latched on to Rob Turner’s through ball, and drilled the ball under the keeper before he had chance to get down to make the save.
Dereham started the second half with the same vigour, and it wasn’t long before Timm was able to complete his hat trick as he beat a couple of defenders at the top of the D before firing home a reverse stick shot.
Mark Hunter was then able to make it 4-1 with a drag flicked short corner high to the keepers left.
The students pulled another back from a short corner of their own, but we’re unable to get anything further from the game. Dereham once again had a number if chances, and could have made the score line more convincing, but we’re unable to add to their tally.
