Dereham's hopes of achieving their first win of the season were undone by Downham's New Zealander Jarred Cunningham on Saturday.

The Kiwi off-spinner opened the bowling after his side had been dismissed for 147 and he found prodigious turn on the Norwich Road surface. He returned figures of six for 43 to almost single-handedly win the game for second-placed Downham.

Dereham had earlier produced an excellent bowling effort, with Kristien Fletcher picking up two early wickets.

Cunningham, who also opened the batting for Downham, received two let-offs as he struggled to impose himself on the Dereham attack.

Gary Starling marked his return to bowling action by strangling Gould into a leg-side dismissal and Cunningham was eventually removed for 33, brilliantly caught at slip by Neil Irons off Max Cheetham.

Cheetham's spin claimed another victim as Dereham kept a tight rein on the Downham batsmen, before the introduction of Tom Head had an immediate effect for the home side.

He took three wickets in his first two overs and Bradley Raper then removed top scorer Arndt, who had made 46, before wrapping up the innings by bowling the last man as Downham were all out for 147 in the 39th over.

Dereham therefore gained seven extra overs to get the runs - but that worked against them as it also meant Cunningham was allowed to bowl 14 overs.

Downham wasted no time in getting their star man into the attack and he struck in his second over when Cheetham scooped a catch to deep midwicket.

Phil Banyard was the next to go for five, caught off a leading edge, but David Lake joined Duncan Hewitt to steady the ship.

Lake made 15, but both he and Hewitt (23) fell to lbw decisions and when the previous week's centurion, Jake Anema, went without scoring, Dereham were deep in trouble.

Their hopes rested with Irons, but after making 25 he became Cunningham's fifth victim - in the first of his extra overs - and from there Dereham folded to 102 all out.

This Saturday, Dereham have a derby match away to Fakenham A (1pm start).
