Dereham Town manager Matt Henman was delighted after his side booked their place in the final of the Norfolk Senior Cup following a 3-1 victory over lower level Diss Town at Aldiss Park on Tuesday, writes Ed Colman.
They will face local rivals Wroxham, who knocked out lower level opposition in the form of Norwich United.
As well as meeting at Carrow Road on Friday, May 15, the two sides also go head to head this weekend – and Henman feels the crunch match couldn’t come at a better time for his side, who have suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two matches leaving them behind the Yachtsmen and outside the Ryman League Division One North play-off places.
“I don’t think the match Saturday could come at a better time for us,” Henman said.
“I think the game itself is an ideal match for us as, although we have had a couple of frustrating results, we have played well at times throughout the two games and the Wroxham game gives us a chance to put that behind us and get it out of our system.
“Both sets of players will be well up for the match, so we won’t have to work too hard for that. It is just such a crucial game for both sides.
“I think it’s fair to say that both sides have over-performed this year and with regards to the play-offs I don’t think there is a lot of pressure on us. It will be more on them as the home side and at the end of the day Saturday won’t decide what happens at the end of the season.”
Dereham took an early lead, through Liam Wales, against Diss. However, the Tangerines soon hit back when striker Matthew Dixon headed home Colin Wines’ corner from the right.
Dereham lost Jay Eastoe-Smith with a knee injury, but were ahead soon after, when Aaron Kay slipped a neat ball through to Wales in the box, enabling him to beat Powley with a skilful finish from close range for his second goal of the night. Craig Bussens sealed victory in the 66th minute.
