Matt Henman will be hoping for a new beginning of sorts this weekend, after two unhappy endings in the space of just a few days, writes Rene Kendal.
The Dereham Town boss saw the Magpies’ interest in the FA Trophy ended at the first hurdle last Saturday when they let slip an interval lead to lose 2-1 at home to Waltham Abbey. Defender Dan Morphew had put the Magpies in front, but two goals from Christian Assombalonga won the game for the visitors.
And then, on Tuesday night at Phoenix Sports in Kent, Dereham saw their seven-match unbeaten run in the Ryman League North ended by a late strike.
Goals from Lewis Butcher and Lewis Wallace gave the Magpies a 2-1 lead at the break. But while Dereham were good value for their lead, the hosts equalised through Chris Hill – and won the game with another goal from Hill in the 89th minute.
This weekend Chatham are the visitors to Aldiss Park (kick-off 3pm) – and then on Tuesday evening it’s Norfolk derby time again as Dereham will be hoping to repeat their 2-0 win at Wroxham last week (kick-off 7.45pm).
