Dereham Town's position at the top of the Bostik League Division One North table is looking increasing tenuous after a second away loss in the space of four days on Tuesday evening.

Looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking last-gasp 2-1 defeat at Haringey Borough on Saturday the Magpies went down at a Witham Town side who had started the evening in 18th position.

The visitors went in at the break on level terms but fell behind on 52 minutes when they conceded a penalty which Elliot Ronto converted.

Neal Simmons' side went in search of an equaliser but it wouldn't come and Australian midfielder Ronto converted a second spot-kick in injury-time to settle the issue.

With their rivals not playing Dereham are still top of the table- but the likes of Canvey Island, Haringey and AFC Hornchurch will go past them if they win their games in hand.

Canvey and Haringey are two points behind, with two and four games in hand respectively, while Hornchurch are four adrift having played four fewer games.

Dereham: Pride, Taylor, Anema, Linford, Eastoe-Smith, Castellan, Logan, Burgers, Crisp, Beaumont, Kelleher. Subs: Katsande, Murphy, Wengrzik, Bean.

The Magpies, who had won six out seven away league games before the weekend, now have a couple of home fixtures to look forward, with two games at Aldiss Park in the space of four days.

First up is a clash with Romford on Saturday (3pm), which will see Dereham hot favourites to take the points against a side who currently prop up the table after taking just six points from their opening 14 fixtures.

The Essex side have struggled badly on the road so far, losing five or their seven fixtures and drawing the other two.

On Tuesday evening it's a Norfolk versus Suffolk encounter, with sixth placed Bury Town - who drew 2-2 with Norwich United in midweek - the visitors (7.45pm).

The pair met at Ram Meadow back in September and it was Dereham who came away with a 1-0 win, courtesy of second half effort for Joe Gatting just before he jetted out to Australia to play cricket.
