Will Smith, 13, finished second in the Junior Great North Wheelchair race on Saturday behind his close rival Sheikh Sheikh from London.

Will, from Westfield near Dereham, was hoping for a hat-trick of wins but was suffering from a wrist strain picked up during a training session the previous day.

He still managed to complete the mile course in 4:19, finishing four seconds behind the winner.

Will's brother Matt, 11, competed in the able-bodied Junior Great North Run, setting a new personal best over the 2.5 mile course of 19:08, fnishing 152nd out of 2,000 starters.

On the Sunday, Will's mum Lisa and dad Mark completed the 13.1 mile Great North Run.

Mark said on Monday: 'My time was 2-03.38 and Lisa's 2-31.00. It was a fantastic day run in warm sunny conditions with over 54,000 entrants. Today we are very stiff! Our finishing positions of 13,507th and 28,106th don't sound quite as good as the boys!

'We have all run our Great North Run races for the excellent charity Get Kids Going who specialise in providing sports equipment to disabled children. To date we have raised around 2,000 and anyone wishing to donate can do so on our Just Giving page.'

Will would like to thank his new sponsor Uniglaze 2 who have provided him with a set of training rollers.

Over the winter Will's attention switches to wheelchair basketball with his team, the Norwich Lowriders, looking forward to their first round of National Junior League matches at Stoke Mandeville on Saturday October 3.

Matt will concentrate on scoring goals for his football team Toftwood United. Both boys attend Northgate High School in Dereham.
