A full weekend of fixtures marked the end of the competitive season for all sections of Dereham Rugby Club with the President's Day and summer ball still to look forward to.

The 1st VX lost a keenly fought and entertaining match at Hadleigh 24-15.

After going two scores down in the early stages they made a spirited comeback to get within four points of the home side before Hadleigh responded with two quick tries as Dereham pushed everything into attack.

The game looked lost but Dereham came back with another score to set up an exciting last 10 minutes in which they pressured the Hadleigh line but couldn't reduce the deficit any further.

Andy Brookes had a dynamic game in the forwards while Barry Rolfe and Jason Pilbrow were outstanding in the backs.

The 2nd XV registered an unprecedented victory against Walsham Vikings, 37-29.

Dereham were down by a score within 15 seconds, but the mixture of youth and experience rallied the side.

Veteran Paul Derbyshire rolled back the years and produced a virtuoso performance, scoring three tries, with a further two from Basecala and one from Stu Ledward.

The Barbarians fielded three sides over two days at the West Norfolk's Sevens.

The youngsters had to contend with a howling wind off the Wash and unseasonably cold temperatures this year, but it didn't dampen their enthusiasm.

The U15s and U13s played on Saturday, and the U15s did particularly well to reach the semi-finals where they were narrowly beaten by Ely.

The new U13 team showed a lot of promise for next year and their competitive performance was a credit to the players.

On Sunday it was the turn of the U16s who found themselves in a very tough group with Diss, Beccles and West Norfolk. Although they didn't manage to win a match the experience of the first two games meant they shocked West Norfolk in their final match by running the favourites very close in a performance that including two fine tries from Lloyd Bullock.

On Saturday the club celebrates the end of season with Presidents Day and a match involving the whole of the senior playing squad. It's hoped that the Barbarians will also field a side for a non-contact game against the senior team. All players and spectators are welcome from 2pm.
