SUPER shooter Mick Gault is set to have eight chances to help him become the most decorated Commonwealth competitor of all time - and also has a “glimmer of hope” that he could take part in the London 2012 Olympics.

The 54-year-old from Dereham has already enjoyed a glittering career and in an ominous message to his rivals admitted he is “getting better.”

Gault has a haul of 15 medals from four Commonwealth Games - nine gold, three silver and three bronze - which is more than any other English sportsman.

He has the all-time haul of 18 medals for any competitor from any country in his sights.

Gault is “99.9 per cent” certain that he will be taking part in the New Dehli games in 2010, and is confident he will be going for eight medals.

Gault - a civil servant at RAF Marham - is set to compete in individual and team events in standard pistol, centre fire, air pistol and free pistol.

He has already started the build up to 2010 and is having to travel to Switzerland to train for the disciplines which he cannot shoot in in this country due to the restrictions following the shooting ban.

Gault also revealed he could be line to compete for Team GB in the 2012 London Olympics if he continues his form. “That would be wow!” he said. “There is a glimmer of hope and if I put the scores in then I cannot be ignored. I would be 58 then and it might be a good time to call it a day!”

Gault is generally modest about his shooting success but had to admit he was “getting better.”

“I am getting mentally stronger and the sport is 90 per cent in the mind.”

Gault kept up his good recent form by again being crowned Welsh Open champion.

During the competition he carded a “world class” score of 582 out of 600 - and it was particularly impressive as he lost eight points in his first 10 shots. That meant he only dropped 10 in the remaining 50 shots.

Gault is used to being decorated for his success but his wife Jan - who has given him unwavering support in his career - has also been decorated by getting the Commander In Chief's Commendation for her services to RAF Marham, where she is a personal secretary to one of the wing commanding officers.
