Dereham put a poor start to the season behind them on Saturday as they hammered visitors Norwich A.

Duncan Hewitt's team were under some pressure going into the Norfolk Alliance Division One fixture, having been beaten in their opening two matches.

But they rose to the occasion in impressive fashion, piling up an impressive total of 242-9 in their 50 overs before bowling Norwich out for just 100 to claim a timely 142-run success.

After being put into bat the hosts lost three early wickets to slip to 46-3 but then Hewitt and Jonny Bidewell set about repairing the damage and they had taken to score just past the 100 mark when Bidwell went for 30. It soon became 103-5 but the skipper found another trusty ally in the shape of Jake Anema who made 26 to help lift the score up to 141.

Joe Marczewski then went for a duck but James Harbour quickly found his feet and helped Hewitt take the score well past 200 before the opener went for a superb 86 featuring 10 boundaries.

Harbour was still there at the end on 48 not out, made at exactly a run a ball, as Dereham set an more than useful target.

It soon became clear that 242 would be more than enough as Anema ripped through the Norwich top order, taking four wickets to finish with the impressive figures of 4-13 from 10 overs.

Soren Gauntlett continued the good work later in the innings by taking 4-26 in just 6.2 overs and Norwich only just crept up to three figures before being all out in the 33rd over.

Jamie Mirner, who made 29, was the only visiting batsman to make an impression while David Lake (2-14) was the third Dereham wicket-taker.

Dereham will be aiming to build on this impressive win on Saturday when they travel to a Diss side who turned on the style with the bat to see off Mattishall last weekend (see inside). The match starts at 1pm.

Dereham A were beaten by five wickets at newly promoted Denver in Division Six. They got up to 168-8 in their 45 overs, with Neil Irons making 88, but it wasn't enough, despite the efforts of Andrew Marshall, who took 3-27.

It's Diss A at home on Saturday.
