Dereham got off the mark in the East Men's Hockey League with a 0-0 draw in a fast and furious match at Bedford on Saturday.
Ex-Bedford player Richard Timm was instrumental in keeping his former colleagues at bay, and fellow defender Rob Turner produced a man-of-the-match display.
Andy Lawrence saw a couple of good efforts from short corners saved by the Bedford keeper, while Dereham keeper Tom Vaughan was untroubled in the first half and won a
one-on-one confrontation second half.
Next up for Dereham is a home clash against fellow strugglers Wisbech, who claimed their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw against Ipswich.
