Magpies must overcome blip in league form

“We have got to look at ourselves,” said a rueful Dereham Town manager Matt Henman (pictured) on Monday in the wake of the shock 5-1 home league defeat by lowly Brantham and ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stanway and Tuesday night’s Norfolk Senior Cup semi-final at Carrow Road against Norwich City.
The Magpies lost top spot in the Ridgeons Premier on Tuesday night to Leiston on goal difference. Both teams have 55 points, Leiston from 22 matches, the Magpies from 24.
Leiston won 1-0 at Haverhill, making up their fixture backlog.
Dereham also have injury concerns, writes John Cushion.
They suffered a nightmare period in the second half on Saturday after equalising Brantham’s opener.
“We were not really at the races first half. We were really untidy in our play and deserved to go 1-0 down. We had some good opportunities in that half but didn’t take them,” said Henman.
“But at the start of the second half we really looked like our old selves, equalised through Ollie Thompson and loooked like we would win the game. Then they scored four in about 10 minutes. It killed the game.”
Looking forward, Henman said: “Now we’ve got to prove this is no more than a blip.
We have got to play Wroxham (fourth with 50 points from 25 games) and Leiston twice, so there is still everything to play for.”
Injuries to Jay Eastoe, Adam Smith and Carl Downes have been receiving treatment this week.
On Saturday, the Magpies travel to a Stanway Rovers team 14 places lower in the section and on Tuesday comes the trip to Carrow Road where the kick-off is at 7.30pm.
Admission will be £4 for adults and £2 for over-60s/under-16s. The Norwich City car park will be open, priced £2 per car. The Wensum end of the Geoffrey Watling City Stand will be open for the match.
A coach will leave Aldiss Park at 6.15pm, price £3 per person.
