MATTISHALL continued on their travels with a trip to last season's Anglian Combination champions Sheringham and kept them in the bottom two. Mattishall are away again on Saturday, to bottom side Sprowston Athletic.
Before kick-off influential Mattishall player Fulcher withdrew with a back injury, but Hewitt returned and was the only change, apart from positional, from the side that had won the cup battle of the previous week.
Following a fine run by Hall, Edwards delivered a fine diagonal ball which only needed a touch from the in-rushing forwards. The game was being played at a high tempo and when Hewitt won the ball in midfield he released Hall who in turn fed Cole. He left Gleave for dead before forcing the home keeper Walton into the game's first real save.
On 20 minutes and following a corner, the ball fell to Starling and his 20-yard effort flew just wide. Starling's free-kick was chested down by Wooden who fired just wide. While Mattishall had the better opportunities, the Shannocks were still competing well and their best plays normally involved the impressive Dickerson. But Mattishall's back four were defending well as a unit. Edwards won the ball in midfield and put Wooden through but his strike was again saved. Wooden had the next chance but his clean strike went narrowly wide and the sides went into the interval level at 0-0.
The second half started with clear-cut opportunities at a premium. On the hour a fine turn in the box by Hall created some space but his shot was deflected for a corner. Starling's delivery was flicked on by Cole to Wooden whose shot was pushed for a corner. This time the ball was only partly cleared and rebounded to Hall whose first shot was palmed away by the keeper only to fall into to path of Lewis. He stroked the ball into the empty net for the breakthrough.
Within minutes Sheringham were on level terms when, after a dangerous cross by Dickerson, Abbs got in front of the on-rushing Pledger to lob the ball into the empty net.
As the game became more stretched gaps where beginning to appear. Hewitt and the tireless Edwards were still hunting the ball down and a fine pass by Hewitt released Lewis whose excellent cross found Hall in space to find the back of the net.
Lewis was causing problems and following another fine run and shot the home keeper Walton made a fine save, and from the resulting corner a Cole flick just missed the target.
With Sheringham pressing forward Cole burst through and one-on-one with the keeper kept his head and waited for the him to commit himself before coolly scoring Mattishall's third.
Mattishall Reserves entertained their counterparts from Wells and in a high-scoring game got back to winning ways with 5-4 victory.
Scorers for Mattishall were Dougal, Gagen, Brett and Christian Harbour (2).
