Hempnall 1, Mattishall 2

MATTISHALL travelled to play Hempnall looking to continue their fine recent form and book a place in the semi-finals of the Mummery (Senior Knockout) Cup.

The returning Pledger was back in goal with Hewitt reverting back into his more customary position in midfield in place of Palmer, who was on the bench.

Hempnall started the brighter and a fine run and cross by Browne saw Fulcher clear the danger for a corner. A slip by Lovell allowed Franklin in on goal, but instead of squaring the ball he choose to shoot and Pledger made the save.

However, it was the visitors who had the best chance when a fine challenge by Edwards won possession and he delivered an excellent through ball to Cole. He burst in on goal but delayed his strike and allowed Nichols to clear the danger for a corner with a last-ditch tackle.

Further good work by Edwards saw him deliver two early crosses, the second of which saw Hewitt shoot over. A home corner and a dangerous delivery produced a fine headed clearance from Fulcher, and when the ball was returned into the box Mills headed over when well placed.

Hempnall went in front on 25 minutes when Fulcher was penalised for a push in the box and Browne converted the spot kick.

As in past weeks, Mattishall's reply was instant, and within five minutes they were back on level terms.

A long clearance by Pledger was flicked on by Wooden to Cole, who found some space between the two centre backs - and this time made no mistake.

The game continued end-to-end but clear-cut chances were at a premium, although right on half-time Hewitt headed off the Mattishall line.

The second half continued with chances still at premium. Substitute Willimot was put clear by Page, but with keeper Pledger rushing from his line the home forward fired over.

Most Mattishall chances were coming from long-range efforts. Hewitt had three attempts which, although flying over the top, were getting closer with each shot.

Mattishall made a double substitution with Knights and Catchpole replacing Wooden and Hall, and switched to 4-3-3

Finally, on 82 minutes, Mattishall were awarded a rare free-kick and Starling's excellent delivery into the box was flicked goalwards by Cole, the pace of the ball beating keeper Cudden.

Suddenly Mattishall, who had looked tired for long periods, were in full stride and a fine run and cross by Lewis set up Cole who brought a fine save from the home keeper.

Catchpole on the left had made an impact. He and Cole forced a late corner which had only been taken when the final whistle went and Mattishall had booked a first-ever semi-final place at Horsford.

Mattishall Reserves went down 3-0 at home to a very strong Blofield Reserves in the C S Morley Cup.

On Saturday, Mattishall are in league action when they entertain Wroxham Reserves at South Green with a 2pm kick-off.
