St Andrews 0, Mattishall 2
MATTISHALL got back to winning ways following two successive defeats, an identical position to their hosts, as both teams tried to keep on the tails of the Anglian Combination Premier Division leaders.
They ended they day in third spot with 35 points from 18 games. Above them are Wroxham Reserves (35 from 18) and Cromer (43 from 18).
Mattishall brought in new signing Lee Perry and also gave a debut to Matthew Taunton, the game kicking off in damp, miserable conditions but in very little wind.
In the early stages neither team created any clear-cut chances although the Saints were guilty of overplaying when well placed. And when they did get to the by-line, their final delivery did not cause any problems and Mattishall cleared their lines easily.
They had a half-chance when a forward got in front of Lewis but he headed wide. At the other end the visitors forced a few corners which came to nothing and were caught offside by a home back four playing a very high but square line. The first half ended goal-less as the drizzle continued to fall. The second half started slowly but Mattishall began to push forward with Taunton seeing more of the ball.
It took 70 minutes before the deadlock was broken when a flowing move down the right ended with the ball pulled back for Gillies to fire home from 20 yards to give Mattishall the lead.
This goal inspired them to push forward looking for the second goal. They were penalised for a back-pass that they claimed was a deflection and Pledger was booked for protesting. But the excellent back four of Lewis, Applegate, Lovell and Stenner continued to dominate.
When Mattishall broke away the ball was picked up by Taunton, who went past numerous defenders before rounding the keeper to score from a tight angle for a goal worthy of winning any match.
Mattishall saw out the game with ease to complete an excellent second half and a fully deserved victory.
Mattishall Reserves made it a good day for the club when they defeated St Andrews Reserves 2-1, with Stockell and Dougal the scorers.
Mattishall entertain defending champions Blofield at South Green on Saturday with a 2.30pm kick-off while the Reserves visit Hemsby, also at 2.30pm.
