The girls at Northgate High School broke new ground last week when their U13 team entered The Lady Taverners indoor eight-a-side competition at the UEA Sportspark.

Building on the work at the school last summer by Norfolk Cricket Board development officer Kevin Denmark, the girls were keen to develop their cricket further and Denmark has been coaching the team since Christmas.

With the support of teacher Amy Harrison they were encouraged to compete in this annual event together with seven other schools. They excelled themselves by reaching the final, before narrowly losing to defending champions North Walsham High School.

The teams were divided into two groups with Northgate winning two matches played over 10 overs each – most notably beating North Walsham by successfully chasing a target of 103. As a result they finished second in their group. In the semi-final they beat the highly fancied team from Lynn Grove, Bradwell.

The squad of 10 players have already vowed to return next year to try and go one step further.
