Swanton Morley record Norfolk Cricket League victory

PUBLISHED: 17:18 12 July 2012

Swanton Morley won at Happisburgh A by 29 runs in Lucas Fettes Norfolk Cricket League Division Six.

Swanton were put into bat and opening batsmen Soren Gauntlett and Bryan Head set a steady early pace, battling against some tidy bowling from J Breeze and C Breeze. The game changed when Head pulled his groin trying to run a three and had to retire hurt.

Joe Hudson was caught on six, in his usual style not wasting any time. Swanton’s anchor man Gary Whiteside arrived at the crease and Gauntlett moved on to reach his 50.

Disaster struck when a few balls later Gauntlett fell to wicket taker R Marsh for 51. A minor batting collapse ensued, with Swanton losing five wickets for 13 runs, R Marsh taking three and J Breeze picking up two. A brief fightback by McKinney saw Swanton post 148-8.

In reply Happisburgh fell at the first hurdle, with D Trivett being left stranded, run out by specialist fielder C Westbury for a duck.

Opening bowlers Gauntlett and Ollie Hood carried on from the success of last week with Gauntlett striking early, taking Luxman caught behind for nine and Hood quickly following up with C Breeze caught behind for eight.

Happisburgh’s R Marsh and R Breeze took advantage of some early sloppy bowling by Nathan Raines, and started to pull the game away from Swanton. Raines found his length and with McKinney stemmed the flow of runs.

The game changed again with the stunning catch of Breeze by Hood to the bowling of Raines, leaving Happisburgh’s incoming batsmen struggling to keep pace with the run rate needed. The return of Gauntlett brought the fall of D Rayner bowled, and when C Westbury was brought into the attack in a pressure situation he delivered a tidy spell including the wicket of P Ames for two. Gauntlett struck again in his final two overs, pushing the game out of the reach of Happisburgh’s lower order.
