Two superb free-kicks help Mattishall to pleasing win

PUBLISHED: 08:59 14 December 2017

Mattishall entertained Acle in one of only two matches played in the Anglian Combination Premier Division at the weekend due to the icy conditions and won an entertaining encounter 3-1.

The pitch was crusty on top but was definitely playable as the day wore on and all credit to the officials who were more than happy to get the match under way.

After a tight opening 20 minutes the hosts were awarded a free-kick just outside the area which Aaron Kaye took. It was hit with accuracy and went over the keeper and into the top right hand corner of the net for the opening goal.

Mattishall continued to press home their attacks and with Tiago Pascal shining down the right flank a good shot went in via a slight deflection to make it 2-0.

Acle were still very much in the game, however, and a clever one two put their striker in on goal with his shot initially saved by Jay Tiplady. But it was followed up well by another Acle player who found the back of the net to make it 2-1 at half-time.

The second half got under way with the temperature dropping and a icy wind picking up, but this did not hamper the players as they were now playing for the vital three points.

The match had reached its closing stages when Acle thought they had equalised as a scorching shot was hit from outside the box and was definitely going in just under the bar. However Tiplady had other thoughts as he superbly tipped the shot over the bar for a corner kick.

Having almost been pegged back Mattishall then went back on the attack and Macann was clean through on goal before being brought down by the visiting keeper, resulting in a free-kick just outside the box.

Up stepped Stuart Woodcock with his trusty left foot and a great shot found the back of the net to make it 3-1. The match finished two minutes later with three welcome points for the home team.

A very good match played out in the right spirit.

Mattishall Reserves travelled the short distance to Anglian Combination Division Two leaders Easton with only 11 players and were taught a lesson in scoring as the hosts went on to win 10-1. Mattishall will be hoping for a second successive home win when they entertain Waveney on Saturday (2pm).

Mattishall Reserves hit the road to take on Holt United (2pm).
