Village footballers aim high

Swanton Morley United, which folded some six years ago, has been revived. In the Crown Fire Central and South Norfolk League, from humble beginnings, United are steadily improving - with the aim of promotion to Division Two next season.

Swanton Morley United, which folded some six years ago, has been revived. In the Crown Fire Central and South Norfolk League, from humble beginnings, United are steadily improving - with the aim of promotion to Division Two next season.

Chairman Gary Hudgell explained: “We are currently still in three cup competitions and doing well in the league. We have gained funding through planned events, by approaching local businesses for raffle prizes, from the Football Foundation and by designing and producing a match day advertiser which advertises local businesses. We have also been awarded FA Charter Standard Club status by the national Football Association.

“The majority of our playing staff are 18 to 20-years-old and have been playing together since they were 11-year-olds.

“They are mainly from Swanton Morley as it has been our goal to occupy local youth and give them a focal point for fitness and a social outlet. A few of our players are employed by the British Army at Swanton Morley and before the end of this season will be returning to Afghanistan to fulfil their duties.

“This has been an opportunity for us all to make stronger links between military and civilian life and make new friendships and understandings between the two inter-linked communities.”

The club sponsor is Roger Atterwill and his company Wensum Valley Services Ltd, an electrical contractor in Swanton Morley.

He is also on the Swanton Morley village hall committee and chairman of the parish council.

Mr Hudgell said: “Ours is a club with strong local links, a social conscience and a family-orientated ethos. Although we are only into our third season, we have been able to build a very good reputation based upon respect and fair play.
