A former Northgate High School pupil, Lt Lucy O'Connor of the Royal Navy, has been selected for the Great Britain women's boxing team who will be competing alongside their male counterparts for the first time in the 2012 Olympics.

Lucy, 31, who is the most senior of the six female boxers in the RN, will be part of the seven-strong GB team and will compete in the 51kg flyweight category.

She began boxing four years ago and is a four-time ABA champion at 57kg. She won gold at the European Championship in 2008 and is ranked fifth in the world. In March this year at the combined Services Sports Awards she was awarded Sportswoman of the Year.

She said: 'It is a dream come true to be selected for the squad but it is now when the hard work really starts. This will be the only chance

I ever get to compete at the Olympic Games so I am going to do everything I can to be part of the team for 2012.'

Lucy lives in Fareham, Hampshire, with her husband Stuart. In 2006 she received the Iraq medal.
